Four suspects who were arrested and charged for slaughtering 30 donkeys and selling the meat at Bama market have been released on a ksh 1 million bond with a surety of a similar amount after pleading not guilty to the charges.

The suspects, Michael Nyoro, Festus Ndung'u Kamande, Peter Ndirangu, and John Muturi, appeared before Baricho Law Courts Senior Principal Magistrate Stephen Nyaga.

They were accused that on May 18, 2024, at approximately 10 a.m., in the Makutano region of Kirinyaga County, they were discovered in possession of donkey meat that was unhealthy and unfit for use, in violation of the Public Health Act.

They were also charged with possessing uninspected meat that is unsuitable for human consumption in violation of sections 8 and 14 of the Meat Control-Local Slaughterhouse Act, as well as cruel animal slaughter in violation of Section 8 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

They will appear in court on June 6th.
