A suspected drug trafficker has been arrested while transporting 327 kilograms of bhang worth an estimated Ksh.9.8 million to Mombasa.
Patrick Odoyo Jabuya, 45, was arrested on Wednesday when his Toyota Prado was halted in the Ikanga district of Voi by multi-agency teams from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Kenya Police Service.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the DCI disclosed that the investigators, acting on a tip from the public, set up a roadblock and waved down the abovementioned car, where the narcotic substance was discovered packed in gunny sacks.
“Acting on a tip-off, the joint team of DCI and KPS officers erected a roadblock at Ikanga area of Voi, flagging down the 45-year-old driver while on frantic efforts to turn about and escape,” read the statement.
“Upon search, 11 gunny bags containing bhang and 963 big rolls of the same unholy herb were found, alongside two extra sets of number plates (KCU 888F & KCV 489R).”
The culprit was quickly detained, and the truck and contents were confiscated and sent to Voi Police Station.
He will remain at Voi Police Station while awaiting arraignment.
According to DCI, legal processes have already been initiated, including the detention of the car bearing the registration number KCP 263K, which is thought to represent the deal's profits.
