M23 rebel group have retreated from a critical military in the eastern part of the democratic republic of congo, handing over the territory to the EAC task force.

the group pulled out of Rumangabo, a military camp in Rutshuru, North Kivu, to adhere to the cease-fire calls established by the east African community. "The M23 remains determined to implement the resolutions of the Luanda mini-summit and supports the region's efforts to find peace in the DRC," the group says.

This attack is the second location they are handing over to the government forces. In late December, the group packed up and left the town of Kibumba. The group's official spokesperson said that the group was doing this as a sign of good faith. A move the government forces called a sham, adding that the group would pop up somewhere else and continue to cause havoc.

The resurfacing of the m23 group in the DRC has raised tensions between kinsasha and Kigali. in mid-2022, DRC expelled the Rwandan ambassador to the county after accusing Rwanda of funding m23 rebels and their activities in the country.

Rwanda president Paul Kagame has fiercely denied these allegations saying that Rwanda has no part in what is going on in DRC, adding that only DRC is to blame for the conflict.

On the 2nd of January 2023, a report released by the European Union warned Rwanda against supporting m23 rebels.

The EU's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, said on Saturday that the EU had urged Rwanda to stop supporting the M23 and to use all available means to press the M23 to follow the decisions made by the EAC (East African Community) and at a November summit in Angola.

"It also strongly urges all states in the region to refrain from providing any support to armed groups operating in the DRC," Borrell added.
