Five Kenya Prisons officers and six inmates have sustained injuries after they were involved in a road accident in Homa Bay town.

The land cruiser pick-up belonging to Rachuonyo GK Prisons lost control and overturned on the outskirts of Homa Bay town, along the Rongo- Homa Bay Highway.

Confirming the accident, Homa Bay County Prisons Commander Robert Basigwa said the victims were rushed to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital by the Kenya Red Cross officials and security officers.

Basigwa said one of the officers sustained serious injuries after a firearm in his possession gored his stomach, while some inmates suffered minor injuries.

“All the inmates are out of danger though they sustained minor injuries,” he said.

Further, he said the vehicle was transporting inmates from Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital, where they had been taken for medication.

Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred when the driver of the land cruiser, in a split-second decision, swerved to avoid hitting a vehicle that had abruptly stopped, leading to the unfortunate overturn.

“The driver of the land cruiser applied emergency breaks before it lost control and overturned,” said Isaiah Ogola, a resident of Homa Bay town.
