A police officer at Nairobi's Parliament Police Station faces corruption charges after attempting to extort Ksh.40,000 from a suspect.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) notes that the suspect was arrested by police, and his case was referred to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for approval.

However, the DPP ordered that the complainant be released and the case be resolved outside of court.

A report released by the anti-graft agency revealed that Corporal John Mwai Mbili is accused of informing the complainant that he needed to give him "something small" to "facilitate a smooth closure" of the case.

“He demanded a bribe of Ksh.40,000 from the complainant threatening that if the complainant failed to pay, he would charge him in court with new offences,” said EACC.

The complainant reported the incident to the integrity watchdog, which began an investigation and eventually arrested Corporal Mbili.

He was processed and jailed at Kilimani Police Station, and he has since been freed on bail, awaiting the outcome of the inquiry.
