According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) revenue generated from the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) freight services rose 3 percent in the first quarter of 2024.

This is an increase compared to the same period in 2023.

The number of passengers handled via the SGR service stood at 531,700 during the quarter, compared to 597,500 in the same period of 2023.

Further, KNBS revealed that an estimated 227,352 passengers traveled monthly using the SGR in 2023.

Additionally, the report stated that SGR transported over 5 million tonnes of cargo between Nairobi and Mombasa during the period in 2023, an increase from 4.5 million tonnes in the same period in 2022.
