Journalists in Nakuru County held a protest on Wednesday to condemn the shooting of their colleague, Catherine Kariuki, during anti-government demonstrations in Nakuru town. The journalists gathered at the railway ground and marched through Kenyatta Avenue, the main street in the bustling city.


They paused briefly at the location where Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki, a reporter for Kameme Radio and TV, was shot three times while covering the protests on Tuesday. The journalists held placards and chanted slogans denouncing violence against the press, demanding accountability and a thorough investigation into the shooting.


The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) also condemned the attack. MCK CEO David Omwoyo described the incident as shameful and terrifying. "The shooting of Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki, a journalist attached to Kameme TV, while in the company of other journalists and the police, is shameful and terrifying," he said.

The Kenya Editors' Guild similarly condemned what they described as the continued, targeted, and brazen attacks on journalists covering protests, calling for an end to such violence and for those responsible to be held accountable.
