The United States Embassy in Kenya has issued a statement urging both law enforcement and demonstrators to refrain from violence amid ongoing anti-government protests that have swept across the country in recent months.

In its Thursday evening statement, the Embassy emphasized the importance of police exercising restraint while carrying out their duties, emphasizing that citizens have the legal right to peacefully protest.

Conversely, the Embassy called on Kenyan protesters to demonstrate peacefully, avoiding disruptive activities such as looting and blocking roads.


"The Embassy calls on police to show restraint and safeguard the rights of individuals to engage in peaceful demonstrations," the statement read. "We urge those who may seek to incite disorder or engage in criminal acts like road blockages and looting to desist. All parties – whether police or protesters – must reject violence and be accountable for any unlawful actions."

Expressing deep concern over the escalating violence and the tragic loss of life during the protests, which have resulted in 53 deaths as of Tuesday's demonstrations, the Embassy stressed the need for constructive dialogue between citizens, civil society, and an independent media to uphold democratic principles.

"As we enter the fifth week of protests across Kenya, with the death toll surpassing 50, the United States Embassy in Kenya mourns the loss of life and devastation to livelihoods, urging all parties to maintain peace and uphold the rule of law," the statement continued. "We are troubled by reports of violence, including shootings and abductions of protestors, journalists, and others."


Reflecting on the enduring partnership between the United States and Kenya, the Embassy acknowledged recent statements by the Kenyan government addressing public concerns.

"As a longstanding friend and ally of Kenya, the Embassy acknowledges the government's commitment to addressing public grievances expressed on July 18 and encourages further progress, particularly in combating corruption and ensuring accountability, to foster national unity and reconciliation," the statement noted. "In our joint efforts to strengthen democratic institutions that ensure peace and prosperity for all citizens, this moment underscores the importance for all Kenyans to uphold shared democratic values."
