The High Court has extended orders blocking the task force appointed by President William Ruto from auditing the public debt. Justice Lawrence Mugambi also permitted the petitioners to serve the respondents and the four task force members through a nationally circulated newspaper. The case will be mentioned on September 18, 2024.
In this case, surgeon Benjamin Magare Gikenyi and Eliud Matindi challenged the task force's appointment, arguing that the president had assumed powers beyond those granted by the constitution.
On July 5, 2024, President William Ruto established an independent task force to conduct a comprehensive audit of the country's public debt. He stated that the task force must deliver a detailed report within three months, which would provide transparent information to the public and assess how public resources have been utilized over time.
“This audit will offer clarity on the nature of our debt, how public resources have been spent, and propose ways to manage our resources sustainably, avoiding burdens on future generations,” Ruto explained.
