NARC-Kenya party has announced its exit from the Azimio la umoja coalition just a day after top members of the ODM party were nominated as cabinet secretaries to the Kenya Kwanza Coalition government.

NARC-Kenya’s Acting Secretary General, Asha Bashir, formally notified Azimio Secretariat Secretary General Junet Mohamed in a letter dated July 25, 2024.

Ms. Bashir cited "prevailing political developments" as a primary reason for the party’s decision. “Our stay in Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition is not tenable due to the prevailing political developments,” she stated. She emphasized that the party adhered to the exit clauses outlined in the Coalition Agreement, making the notice effective immediately.

This announcement followed President William Ruto’s nomination of four members from the Azimio affiliate party ODM to his Cabinet. On Wednesday, Ruto nominated ODM Chair and Nominated MP John Mbadi to head the Treasury ministry and National Assembly Minority Leader and Ugunja MP James Opiyo Wandayi to oversee the Energy docket. Additionally, former Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho was nominated to lead the Ministry of Mining and Blue Economy. In contrast, former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya was chosen to head the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs Development.



These nominations have caused significant disruption within the opposition, despite previous assertions that they were not seeking positions within the Kenya Kwanza administration. NARC-Kenya and other Azimio parties, such as Wiper, Jubilee, DAP-K, and PNU, had previously stated they had no plans to join the government, viewing such moves as a betrayal to the Kenyan people.
