The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recently announced the appointment of Brigadier Paul Njuguna as the new spokesman, succeeding Brigadier Ziporah Kalondu Kioko. Brig Njuguna previously held the spokesman role from 2018 to 2020 before transferring to the National Defence University-Kenya's (NDU-K) Directorate of Corporate Communications.

Brig Kioko, who has been in the position since 2020, was instrumental in establishing the KDF's Strategic Communications Branch and has been a key figure since 2008, steering initiatives such as Operation Okoa Maisha and mainstreaming the environmental soldier program.

Brig Kioko's tenure saw significant developments, including leading the first press visit to Kismayu and maintaining communications throughout Operation Linda Nchi and subsequent missions.

Her contributions were foundational in advancing KDF's accountability and public communication through innovative approaches, including a weekly bulletin. As she moves to her new role, Brig Njuguna returns to familiar ground, bringing experience and a deep understanding of the strategic communications landscape within the military.

The KDF is navigating a rapidly evolving communication environment, particularly with the rise of social media. The recent reshuffle, announced at a Defence Council meeting chaired by Prime Cabinet Secretary and acting Defence Minister Musalia Mudavadi, reflects this challenge.

Alongside Brig Njuguna's appointment, Maj Gen Stephen James Mutuku was named Deputy Commandant of the National Defence College, and several officers were promoted and reassigned within various branches of the military.

In the Kenya Army, Col Edward Nyamao was promoted to Brigadier and appointed Chief of Compensation and Welfare, while Col Collins Otieno was promoted to Brigadier and appointed Chief of Personnel.


The Navy saw Brig John Sankale Kiswaa appointed Deputy Commander, with other key promotions and appointments made across the services, including Col Paul Koech as Chief of Training and Col Clement Nyakundi as Deputy Managing Director of the Kenya Meat Commission.

These changes underscore the KDF's commitment to adapting to new communication trends and enhancing its operational efficiency. The Defence Council, which regularly reviews and implements such changes, also included Chief of Defence Forces Gen Charles Kahariri, Vice Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen John Omenda, Army Commander Lt Gen David Tarus, Kenya Airforce Commander Maj Gen Fatuma Ahmed, and Navy Commander Maj Gen Paul Otieno. This reshuffle reflects the KDF's strategic direction and adaptation to current and future challenges.
