The Nursing Council of Kenya has appointed Lister Onsongo as the new registrar and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective September 1, 2024.
Onsongo takes over from former CEO Edna Tallam, whose tenure ended in December 2023.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Council’s chairperson Eunice Ndirangu stated that Onsongo has an extensive background in healthcare leadership and a strong commitment to advancing the nursing and midwifery profession.
"On behalf of the Council, I am pleased to announce that following a competitive recruitment process, Dr Lister Onsongo, PhD, has been appointed as the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing Council of Kenya, effective September 1, 2024.”
"As we continue to uphold our mission of regulating nursing and midwifery education and practice to protect the public and improve healthcare quality in Kenya," Ndirangu added.

Onsongo is mandated to oversee the coordination and regulation of all nursing and midwifery-related activities in the country, including education and practice.
Further, she is required to provide leadership in research, inventions, digitization, and innovations in nursing and midwifery practice, among other duties.
The Nursing Council of Kenya was established by the Nurses and Midwives Act Cap 257 of the Laws of Kenya to regulate standards of nursing and midwifery education and practice.
