The High Court has ordered the government to pay a Kes441 million compensation to families of 147 students who died in the April 2, 2015 terror attack at the Garissa University.

The court has additionally ordered the state to pay Kes56.9 million in compensation to the survivors of the terror attack, who endured physical and psychological effects as a result of the attack.

The family of each deceased person will receive Ksh.3 million, while survivors were granted variant amounts of compensation.

In 2019, students, families, and Kituo Cha Sheria sued the government, security agencies, and the college for failing to stop the attack despite having useful intelligence.

A three-judge bench proved that the state had the responsibility of protecting them during the attack, and as a result of its failure, students lost their lives, and their constitutional rights were violated.

The court also found that the state contravened deploying officers to Garissa University without following the law.
