Kisumu County Governor Anyang' Nyong'o is demanding an explanation from the National Police Service (NPS) regarding the arrest and subsequent deportation of 36 Ugandan opposition politicians. The politicians, who were members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Party, were reportedly detained at a guest house in Kisumu before being sent back to Uganda.

In a statement, Governor Nyong'o explained that the FDC politicians were meeting at the Ukweli Pastoral Centre along the Kisumu-Kakamega highway when they were attacked and violently arrested.

According to Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye, the group had just concluded their meeting on July 23 when armed individuals, allegedly Ugandan and Kenyan security personnel, broke into their rooms, assaulted them, and forcibly took them back to Uganda in the middle of the night.

Governor Nyong'o emphasized that the politicians had lawfully entered Kenya with permission from immigration officials to attend the meeting. He expressed disappointment over the incident, condemning the treatment of the politicians within Kisumu County's jurisdiction. He clarified that the Kisumu County Government had no involvement with the politicians but stressed that the Kenyan police should explain why their officers participated in the incident.

Nyong'o called for a thorough investigation into the matter, highlighting that Kenya is a democratic country that respects international human rights charters and should not be complicit in curtailing the rights of individuals lawfully present in the country.
