The government has announced a salary increase for all police officers starting from July 1, 2024, as part of ongoing reforms to boost efficiency and integrity within the forces.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo stated that the pay hike was rolled out in phases, beginning with constables receiving a 40% salary increase. The percentage of the increase is lower for officers of higher ranks.
The second phase of the salary adjustment, which will include officers from the Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) and the National Youth Service (NYS), will begin in September 2024.

These reforms are based on recommendations from the task force on police reforms, chaired by former Chief Justice David Maraga. President William Ruto established the task force in December 2022 to lead reforms across the KPS, NPS, and NYS.
The task force proposed a four-year reform plan focusing on leadership within the services, oversight and accountability, institutional capacity development, human resource management, operational preparedness, and logistical capability.
To ensure full implementation of the reforms by 2028, the government has set up a Technical Committee on the Development of Legal and Policy Frameworks, which will be supported by reform units within each service.
The government's statement reiterated its dedication to implementing these reforms, vital for strengthening Kenya's security sector and improving service delivery to citizens.
