A family in North Kadem, Migori County, is urging the government to compel a contractor to remove waste materials dumped on their land, which was leased out as a dumping site. The family had leased the three-acre plot in 2015 to a contractor working on the Kuja Irrigation Scheme.

According to Mark Olunga, the agreement stipulated that the contractor would remove the waste from the land after five years when the lease expired. However, the contractor abandoned the site without fulfilling this obligation. Despite Olunga's repeated attempts to contact the contractor, there has been no response, leaving the land unusable for farming.

Olunga has appealed to the government, through the National Irrigation Authority, to intervene and hold the contractor accountable for clearing the waste. Filgona Olunga echoed his concerns, lamenting that the land has been wasted for years due to the contractor's failure to honor the agreement.

In response, the Lower Kuja Irrigation Scheme manager told Citizen Digital that a team has been stationed at the scheme's offices for the past two weeks to address complaints from those affected by the project. He urged anyone who has not received assistance to file their complaints with the committee.
