Homa Bay County omena vendors are concerned about a persistent shortage due to rising commodity prices, resulting in low profits.
According to the Kenya News Agency (KNA ), vendors were forced to purchase a 10-kilogram bucket at a double market price of Kes 2,000 instead of the Kes 1000 before the shortage.
Vendors are compelled to sell omena at a higher price to buyers who they claim are sometimes hesitant to purchase the commodity.
“We cannot make any profit from selling omena and at the end of the day, we have very little earnings to take home,” one of the traders told KNA.
On the other hand, Mary Ayako, a vendor, blamed Ugandan security officers, who alleged that she had prohibited fishermen from fishing on the other side of the lake.
