Over 300 Members of County Assemblies (MCAs), primarily from Central Kenya, have voiced their support for Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki as the region’s new political leader. These MCAs, representing Nairobi and 11 counties in the Mt. Kenya region—including Murang’a, Kiambu, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu, Nyandarua, Nakuru, Isiolo, Meru, and Tharaka Nithi—made their declaration in a joint address and statement to the media.

The MCAs pledged to back Prof. Kindiki as the key link between the Mt. Kenya region and the Kenya Kwanza government, following a similar endorsement by 69 MPs from the area the previous week. They believe Kindiki will effectively champion the region's development agenda and enhance the welfare of its people.

The leaders reiterated their support for President William Ruto’s administration, expressing confidence that Kindiki would help unify the region and advance national unity. “As grassroots leaders, we’ve agreed to rally behind Prof. Kithure Kindiki, who has committed to championing our region’s development and welfare,” they said in the joint statement.

They further praised Kindiki’s experience and capability to meet Mt. Kenya's development needs while also considering the interests of other regions for the overall prosperity of the country. Addressing the political tension between Kindiki and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the MCAs called the rivalry “divisive and counterproductive,” warning that it was tarnishing the region's image.

Echoing President Ruto’s emphasis on national unity, the MCAs stressed the importance of focusing on regional development without deepening ethnic divisions. They urged all leaders to prioritize projects that would benefit the region while maintaining national cohesion, cautioning against negative political discourse that could hinder development.

The MCAs also noted that Prof. Kindiki had committed to responding to their endorsement within 30 days, with promises to address their welfare, work terms, ward development funding, pensions, and financial autonomy for county assemblies.

Earlier the same day, over 2,000 Njuri Ncheke elders had also endorsed Prof. Kindiki as the leader of the Mt. Kenya East region.
