The Kenya Defence Forces has officially handed over the Kes 2.4 billion MV Uhuru II to the Kenya Railways Corporation in Kisumu County.

Kenya Shipyards Limited (KSL) Managing Director Kenya Major General Said M. Farah handed over MV Uhuru II to Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga, EBS.

The Ceremony was witnessed by CS Ministry of Defence Hon. Roselinda Soipan Tuya, EGH, and her Roads counterpart Davis Chirchir.

The government constructed the 100-metre-long vessel in June 2021 to complement MV Uhuru I and meet the rising demand for goods transportation within the Lake Victoria region.

The milestone has positioned the country as a shipbuilding and repair destination in the East Africa region.

The transfer will open many job opportunities for locals at the Port, as the vessel will transport goods to the neighboring countries of Uganda and Tanzania.

The vessel's construction underscored Kenya Shipyards’ ability to build, repair, and maintain ships for the local and regional markets.

MV Uhuru I, built in 1965, resumed operation in 2019 after the Kenya Defence Forces successfully rehabilitated her. She has a capacity to carry 1,260 tonnes of cargo.

MV Uhuru II, capable of transporting 1,063 metric tonnes of cargo, is optimized for the transportation of petroleum oil products as well as cereals, fertilisers, sugar, and seeds.
