Residents of Loresho, Nairobi County, are calling on the government to take action against illegal land grabbing by unknown private developers. During a meeting held at the Loresho PCEA church on Wednesday evening, attended by Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, residents claimed that about 3 acres of land belonging to the Loresho Police Post had already been occupied by the alleged grabbers.
The meeting followed protests by the community on Tuesday, when they stormed the Loresho Police Post after an unidentified group demolished a perimeter wall.
Paul Ndungu, a former chairman of the commission of inquiry into the legal allocation of public land and a long-time Loresho North resident, told Citizen TV that while the court had initially recognized the community's ownership of the land, the case was mysteriously overturned after an appeal by unknown developers.
"We had confirmed that the commissioner of lands had allocated all 6 acres for police use. Despite government officials promising to help, no real action was taken. That’s why we felt the need to go to court ourselves to prevent the land from being grabbed," Ndungu explained.
MP Wanyonyi voiced his support for the residents, promising to stand by them and assist in securing the land and obtaining the necessary legal documents. "I am here to stand with you so we can work together to protect this land and get the rightful paperwork," he assured.
Wanyonyi urged the community to take legal steps to defend their property and challenged the unknown developers to present valid ownership documents. "We are not against development, but it should be planned. I am willing to knock on any door to make sure we resolve this," he added.
He also called on the police to fulfill their duty by safeguarding public land and ensuring the safety of the residents, rather than protecting criminals.
In a statement shared with Citizen TV, the residents said they had filed a petition to stop the illegal land grabbing, in accordance with the Constitution. "We, the residents of Loresho, petition the relevant authorities to urgently intervene and halt the unlawful encroachment and grabbing of our community land at the corner of Kaptagat Road and Loresho Ridge Road," the statement read.
The residents are now urging the government to take swift action to stop the illegal encroachment and are calling for an investigation into the ownership and allocation of the land to ensure justice and the protection of public interest.
