A 32-year-old woman and her nine-year-old son were killed by a speeding milk-ferrying pickup in the Gacharu area along the Sagana-Karatina Highway on Friday morning.

Confirming the accident, Kirinyaga West Sub-County Police Commander Moses Koskei said the pickup en route to Karatina from Sagana ran over the mother and son while waiting for the boy's school bus to pick him up.

Further, he said the vehicle's driver turned himself in at Kiangwaci Police Station following the incident.

"We have taken the body of a 32-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son to Kibugi Funeral home waiting postmortem and the vehicle has been towed to Sagana Police Station.”

Angry residents subsequently blocked the busy highway, demanding a meeting with the contractors responsible for the road.

They accused them of neglecting to include speed bumps despite the presence of numerous schools along the route.

"Accidents along this road are caused by speeding vehicles and the Chinese contractor has failed to erect bumps on the road despite children needing to cross the road to get to school," said David Mwangi, a resident.
