Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua still has a fighting chance despite facing a historic impeachment motion supported by 291 Members of Parliament.
The motion, tabled by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, accuses Gachagua of gross constitutional violations, misconduct, corruption, undermining the presidency, and bullying.
The number of MPs backing the motion far exceeds the 117 signatures needed to initiate an impeachment process.

Not all lawmakers support the bid. A group of 54 MPs, including notable figures like Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, chose not to sign the motion.
Others, such as Nyali MP Mohammed Ali, have openly criticized the impeachment effort, describing it as a political witch hunt to tarnish Gachagua's reputation.
Ali disapproved of the motion, highlighting the Deputy President's contributions to the country and condemning the impeachment as ill-intentioned.
Marakwet West MP Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich echoed this sentiment, calling for Speaker Moses Wetangula and Deputy Speaker to step aside, citing their previous remarks that could compromise the fairness of the process.
Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba also opposed the motion, arguing that it distracts from pressing national issues. Surprisingly, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, who has previously clashed with Gachagua over Mt Kenya's political dominance, did not support the motion either.
Several other Mt Kenya MPs, including Edward Muriu (Gatanga), Mary Maua (Maragua), and Joseph Munyoro (Kigumo), defended Gachagua, claiming the impeachment is part of a larger plot to weaken his influence ahead of the 2027 elections.
