Moi University has suspended all learning activities due to an ongoing lecturers' strike and subsequent student unrest.
In a memo issued on Thursday, October 3, Vice Chancellor Isaac Kosgey announced the institution's immediate closure.
During a special meeting held by the University Senate, it was decided to suspend the first Semester of the 2024/2025 Academic Year due to staff industrial action and the resulting unrest among students.

“All students across all campuses are required to vacate the university premises immediately,” Kosgey stated, directing those in university housing to leave. International students were advised to consult the Dean of Students for further guidance. New reopening dates will be announced at a later time.
Earlier in the day, anti-riot police dispersed Moi University students protesting in Eldoret town over halted academic activities. Law enforcement officers turned back hundreds of students attempting to march to the Central Business District (CBD).
The students expressed frustration over the continued lecturers' strike, urging leaders to mediate and restore learning.
Lecturers and university staff had also protested in Eldoret a day prior, demanding the payment of overdue salaries and the enforcement of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
