Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has criticized the 281 Members of Parliament who voted to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing them of being influenced by the executive.

Kalonzo expressed concern over the swift impeachment process, stating that the Kenya Kwanza government was using Gachagua as a distraction to shift attention from its own failings.

"I commend the 44 MPs who stood their ground and refused to be manipulated. I was also impressed by Gachagua's defense during the proceedings," Kalonzo remarked.

Musyoka also questioned the legitimacy of the current National Assembly, claiming it was "impeached by the people" during the June 26 protests led by Kenyan youth, known as the Gen Z protests.

"Many of us believe this Parliament lost its moral authority after being rejected by Kenyans on June 25. Therefore, they lack the standing to handle issues of national significance," he added.

The protests were sparked by the controversial Finance Bill 2024 passage, which triggered public outrage. The protests culminated in a violent clash outside Parliament, where police fatally shot demonstrators.

Last week, the National Assembly voted overwhelmingly to impeach Gachagua, citing allegations of gross misconduct and constitutional violations.

The Deputy President now awaits a final decision from the Senate and the judiciary, where he hopes to clear his name.
