Kenyan football legend Austin Oduor, former Gor Mahia captain and Harambee Stars defender has passed away after collapsing at his home in Mumias.
Known for leading Gor Mahia to their historic 1987 Nelson Mandela Cup victory, Oduor was a celebrated figure in Kenyan soccer.
He was also the father of former Harambee Stars goalkeeper Arnold Origi and the brother of Mike Okoth, another great Harambee Stars player who excelled during the 1990s and represented Kenya in the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations.
Oduor’s death sent shockwaves through the football community. Eliud Owalo, former ICT Cabinet Secretary and a loyal Gor Mahia supporter expressed his profound grief on social media, saying he was deeply shocked by the loss.
Sammy ‘Kempes’ Owino, a former teammate and childhood friend of Oduor, also paid tribute, sharing memories of their time at Umeme FC. Owino noted that he had recommended Oduor to Gor Mahia and witnessed his rise to stardom. He offered heartfelt condolences to the Oduor family, calling him a dear friend who will be sorely missed.
Austin Oduor leaves behind a legacy as one of Kenya’s most disciplined and respected footballers. His passing marks the end of an era for Kenyan football, and the entire nation mourns the loss of a true legend.
