A recent autopsy has shed light on the tragic death of 47-year-old Kenyan woman Lucy Wambui following a “360-degree liposuction” and Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) on October 16, 2024, at Omnicare Medical.

Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor, who conducted the postmortem, revealed that Wambui suffered severe complications shortly after her procedure.

Two days post-surgery, she experienced chest pain, breathing difficulties, and abdominal pain, signaling the onset of severe medical issues.

Initially diagnosed with pneumonia and parapneumonic effusion, Wambui was discharged from Omnicare on October 22. However, her symptoms intensified, and she was later admitted to Nairobi Hospital with dangerously low blood pressure.

A medical examination identified multiple complications, including a distended abdomen, sepsis indicators, and significant bruising. Lab results showed elevated inflammatory markers, high white blood cell count, and kidney distress, pointing to a widespread infection.

On October 23, emergency surgery revealed intestinal perforations and fecal matter in her abdomen. Surgeons performed an ileostomy to bypass the damaged intestines.

Despite intense medical intervention with antibiotics and other treatments, her condition worsened. She tragically passed away on October 26 from severe sepsis and peritonitis.

Dr. Oduor’s report detailed Wambui’s condition, noting extensive lung and abdominal inflammation, fat necrosis, multiple abscesses, and septic wounds from the initial liposuction.

Her liver showed fatty degeneration, and her heart was enlarged, both signs of systemic stress from infection and trauma.

Wambui’s case underscores the dangers of cosmetic surgeries such as liposuction and BBLs, which are rising in popularity globally but carry serious risks.

In Kenya, these procedures raise concerns as insufficient regulation of aesthetic clinics has led to cases like Wambui's, spotlighting the need for stricter oversight.
