The government has confirmed that through the Ministry of Health, the Treasury will disburse Kes 1.75 billion to counties to pay doctors' salary arrears.

The funds will be availed as conditional grants to clear part of the Ksh.3.5 billion owed to doctors in the 2017-2021 collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

According to a commitment letter from the Treasury, the funds will be available as agreed during the nationwide doctors' strike that paralyzed services for three months.

The first Kes 1.75 billion will be available in the 2024/2025 financial year, with the remaining amount to be provided in the following financial year to settle the full Ksh.3.5 billion arrears.

Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni stated that the presidential taskforce on human resources is currently finalizing the formulation of a health human resources policy, which the country has never had in place.

"The basic salary arrears that is owed by the counties to the doctors, is going to be given as a conditional grant by the national government," said Muthoni.
