Garissa Woman Representative Edo Udgoon has urged the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to investigate Senator Abdul Haji over alleged incitement.
Udgoon's request follows a viral social media video, reportedly recorded on November 9, where Senator Haji is seen addressing a public rally in Garissa Township.
In the video, Haji allegedly remarks that while they generally strive to live peacefully, they sometimes face provocation from others.
He references the tragic deaths of several young family members from the Samawathal community, who he claims were "shot dead mercilessly." Haji adds that although they initially responded with patience, the ongoing grief has now brought mothers to tears, suggesting that "soon, other people’s mothers will be crying."
Udgoon argues that Haji’s statements are crafted to incite animosity against specific communities, stirring fears of potential violence and deepening ethnic tensions in Garissa County. In her November 11 letter to NCIC’s CEO, she emphasizes that such statements risk escalating violence among communities, possibly leading to severe harm and loss of life.
Udgoon highlights that Haji’s comments contradict the expected conduct of a public leader or state officer, as outlined by the Kenyan Constitution. She has demanded a prompt investigation and accountability for his remarks, stressing the importance of preserving peace and safety for all Garissa residents.
Besides the NCIC, her letter was shared with the Ministry of Interior, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations. The video has since raised public concerns across Garissa, with many residents fearing a rise in ethnic tensions that could disrupt the community’s peace and safety.
By addressing these government agencies, Udgoon hopes for swift action to uphold cohesion and safeguard lives in the country.
