A tragic bus accident in northern Pakistan left at least 14 people dead as the vehicle carrying wedding guests veered off the road and plunged into a river.

The bride, currently the sole confirmed survivor, is receiving medical care in Gilgit Hospital and is reported to be out of danger.

The accident occurred in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, where Wazir Asad Ali, a rescue official, reported that 14 bodies had been recovered from the river. In contrast, the search continues for ten others who remain missing. Senior police officer Naik Alam noted that the bus driver appeared to have been speeding and lost control while navigating a sharp curve.

The guests, including the groom’s family, had traveled over 500 kilometers (approximately 300 miles) from Punjab to celebrate the wedding and were returning home when the accident occurred.

Fatal road accidents are all too common in Pakistan, often due to poor safety standards, limited driver training, and inadequate infrastructure.

Just recently, a similar tragedy in August claimed 12 lives when a bus crashed into a ravine along the Makran Coastal Highway in Balochistan.

In another incident that same month, 24 people died when a bus fell into a ravine near Azad Pattan on the border between Punjab and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
