The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has announced plans to launch the second phase of their nationwide strike in December if the government does not honor their collective bargaining agreement (CBA) by November 30.

Speaking during the union's annual general meeting for the Nyanza region in Kisii, KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atella criticized the government for neglecting the agreement, which is legally binding and filed in court, despite mounting challenges faced by healthcare workers.

“We have already initiated contempt proceedings against all 47 counties and the national government. If they fail to comply, we will strike in December, marking 2024 as the year KMPDU went on strike twice,” said Dr. Atella. “We have given the government until November 30.”

Nyanza KMPDU Chairman, Dr. Steve Ndong’a, echoed the warning, particularly targeting Migori County. “We are issuing a warning shot. Migori County will face a strike in the next 14 days unless all our grievances are urgently addressed,” he stated.

The union is demanding resolutions on key issues, including job promotions, payment of interns, and salary increases, among other concerns.

The meeting brought together medical professionals from Kisii, Nyamira, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisumu, and Siaya counties.
