Starlink, the satellite internet service provider owned by Tesla billionaire Elon Musk, is preparing to launch operations in Tanzania after submitting a formal license application to the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA).
In a public notice dated November 15, 2024, it was revealed that Starlink Satellite Tanzania Limited has applied for licenses for national network facilities and national application services. Other applicants include GX Technologies Company Limited and Mauritian-based Paratus Tanzania Limited.
This application marks a key milestone in Starlink’s efforts to expand its global footprint and provide high-speed satellite internet to underserved areas of Tanzania.
Starlink’s anticipated entry into the Tanzanian market has faced several regulatory hurdles, including negotiations over spectrum rights and compliance with the country’s data protection laws. The TCRA has invited public comments on the license applications within a 14-day window, with a final decision expected after the consultation period.
The regulator emphasized the importance of Starlink aligning its operations with local regulations, particularly regarding data security and internet governance.

Talks between Starlink and the Tanzanian government have been protracted, primarily focusing on the allocation of spectrum rights essential for satellite internet services. Starlink has also worked to ensure its services comply with Tanzania’s data privacy and protection standards.
Elon Musk has previously voiced frustration over regulatory delays in rolling out Starlink services in various countries. Nevertheless, the company remains optimistic about its ability to deliver high-speed connectivity to underserved regions across Tanzania.
Starlink’s technology is designed to bring fast, reliable internet to rural and remote areas often overlooked by traditional broadband providers. Tanzania, with its significant rural population and limited access to high-speed internet in remote regions, presents a promising market for the service.
By providing affordable and accessible internet, Starlink aims to bridge the digital divide in Tanzania, enabling millions to benefit from improved connectivity. This expansion has the potential to unlock new economic opportunities, enhance education, and drive innovation, particularly in regions where reliable internet access has been a longstanding challenge.
