A fatal road accident claimed the lives of five people, with several others sustaining severe injuries, at Kibirigwi, along the Sagana-Karatina Road in Ndia, Kirinyaga County.
According to Kirinyaga West Sub-County Police Commander Moses Koskei, the accident occurred when a lorry transporting bags of maize lost control while heading towards Sagana.
The out-of-control vehicle collided with two private cars traveling in the opposite direction towards Karatina.
"Five individuals lost their lives instantly, while one critically injured person was rushed to the hospital by officers at the scene," stated Commander Koskei.

The police are conducting thorough investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash. The lorry's driver, who also sustained injuries, is under scrutiny as part of the probe.
Eyewitnesses, including resident Githiru Wanjohi, reported that the lorry was speeding before overturning, scattering maize bags across the highway and causing significant disruption.
The victims' bodies have been moved to Kerugoya Mortuary, where identification procedures are ongoing.
This tragic incident has raised concerns about road safety along the busy Sagana-Karatina route, emphasizing the need for stricter adherence to traffic regulations.
