A military officer was injured in a mob attack in Wajir Plaza Park on Monday evening, prompting a swift response from both the police and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

According to police, the incident began around 8:40 p.m. when Chief Hashim of Wajir Township issued a distress call, reporting unrest in the area.

“Officers from the Wajir Township Police Station, who were patrolling the town, arrived quickly and discovered Senior Sergeant Lonzi Joseph, a member of the Department of Defence (DoD) stationed in Wajir, as the victim of the attack,” reads the report in part.

Sergeant Joseph, who was riding a red motorcycle, described how he was approached by a group of people who forcibly took his motorcycle's ignition keys and hit him with stones, causing injuries to his forehead.

Police officers at the scene dispersed the crowd to secure the area.

Shortly after, a group of military officers led by Major Masai from the Wajir KDF branch arrived to provide backup.

The officers fired blanks into the air to disperse the mob and ensure the safety of the injured sergeant.

Sergeant Joseph was taken to Wajir Referral Hospital for medical attention, where he was treated and discharged the same evening.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Wajir East is handling the case. It has launched investigations to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
