An 18-year-old died on Monday evening after he was mauled by a hippopotamus at Kokina beach in West Yimbo location Usigu sub-county within Siaya County.
Confirming the incident, Chief of West Yimbo location, Paul Olang’ said the victim identified as Maxwell Ochieng’ met his untimely demise after he went to take a bath at the shores of Lake Victoria only three days after finishing his KCSE examinations at Osieko Secondary School.
According to Olang’, the boy is said to have gone to take a bath at the lakeshore together with his three other friends when the hippo attacked and mauled him as the others who managed to run for safety watched helplessly.
Olang’ stated that the hippo mauled and threw Maxwell’s body into the lake.
The body is yet to be retrieved.

He stated that a search for that body would begin Wednesday morning and warned children against bathing along the lake shore, especially now that the lake is full due to the increased rains.
