Nairobi is set to transform its traffic management with a new partnership between the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and Samsung C&T.
The agreement, announced by Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, ushers in the first phase of the city’s Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and Traffic Management Centre (TMC).
The initial phase will focus on geometric enhancements to 25 critical junctions throughout the city, including major intersections such as Moi Avenue/Kenyatta Avenue, Koinange/Kenyatta Avenue, Mbagathi Way/Lang’ata Road, and Limuru Road/Muthaiga Road.
These upgrades are intended to optimize junction configurations to better accommodate the increasing traffic demands, ensuring smoother movement and enhanced safety for all road users.

In addition to junction improvements, the ITS initiative will incorporate advanced field equipment that modernizes Nairobi’s traffic management systems. Key components of the project include the installation of: Traffic signals and controllers to facilitate efficient vehicle movement.
CCTV cameras and Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be installed for real-time information dissemination to motorists.
Vehicle Enforcement Systems (VES) and Vehicle Detection Systems (VDS) will be set for improved traffic regulation and data collection.
“This comprehensive upgrade will greatly improve traffic flow and safety in our city,” remarked CS Chirchir, highlighting the transformative potential of the project.
Construction of the TMC, located at Cabanas along Mombasa Road, is scheduled to begin in March 2025. Once operational, the center will serve as the hub for overseeing and managing Nairobi’s traffic, enabling quicker response times and more informed decision-making.
The collaboration between KURA and Samsung C&T represents a significant milestone in Nairobi’s quest to adopt smart city solutions. As one of Africa’s fastest-growing urban centers, Nairobi’s modernization efforts are expected to set a standard for other cities in the region.
