Authorities in Migori County have launched investigations into the tragic death of a 5-year-old girl who drowned in an open pit in Suna East last week.

The pit, reportedly left unfilled by road contractors after murram extraction, has raised safety concerns in the region.

According to Suna-Sagegi location Chief Sila Ogutu, the young girl had been swimming in the pit with four other children when the incident occurred. Residents, alerted by the children’s screams, managed to rescue the other four, but tragically, the young girl could not be saved.

Her body has since been taken to the mortuary as investigations continue.

Chief Ogutu criticized contractors for neglecting to refill pits after completing their projects, calling such negligence a significant safety hazard. He urged authorities to hold contractors accountable for ensuring the community's safety by properly managing construction sites.

Additionally, Chief Ogutu appealed to parents to remain vigilant and safeguard their children, especially during the rainy season when such dangers are heightened.
