Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged an orchestrated attempt on his life during a funeral in Limuru, Kiambu County, on November 28, 2024.

Speaking to NTV, Gachagua described the chaos as a calculated attack, criticizing the lack of uniformed police presence and the withdrawal of his security details days before the incident.

The funeral turned violent when armed assailants disrupted proceedings, targeting attendees and storming the VIP section with weapons. Gachagua claims local security officials enabled the attack, alleging they provided attackers access as early as 8 a.m.

He further accused Kiambu MP John Kiragu of suspicious actions, noting videos showing the attackers escorting the MP after the incident.

According to Gachagua, the violence began during speeches when masked attackers stormed the VIP tent with machetes, axes, and iron bars. His private security shielded him, sustaining injuries in the process. He revealed that one guard was hospitalized after being struck on the head with an iron bar. Residents reportedly helped rescue Gachagua amidst the chaos.

Gachagua criticized the police for their inaction and claimed officers in unmarked vehicles blocked attendees from leaving. He also alleged that two leaders, former MP Peter Mwathi and Babirioni MCA, were abducted during the attack and later abandoned, with one requiring medical care.

The former DP condemned violence in politics, warning it could destabilize the nation. He canceled events in Nakuru and Molo, citing safety concerns.

Gachagua dismissed ongoing peace campaigns in Mt. Kenya as misplaced, urging a focus on banditry-prone areas like Baringo.
