Three children aged between 4 and 10 years tragically died on Friday evening after their house was engulfed in flames in Moburo village, Kapsogut location, Kericho County.

Among the victims was a 10-year-old with disabilities. The minors had been locked inside the house by their sibling, who had gone to a neighbor’s home to play.

Residents reported that the fire completely destroyed the timber and iron-sheet house, leaving nothing salvageable. Villagers suspect the blaze may have been caused by a phone left charging in the house, which they believe could have exploded and ignited the fire.

Neighbors noticed thick smoke billowing from the homestead and rushed to help, but the fire had already consumed the house. Efforts to extinguish the flames were hindered by the dry timber used in the house’s construction and strong winds in the area.

Police officers from Cheborgei Police Station responded to the incident, recovered the remains of the children, and transferred them to Kapkatet Hospital mortuary.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the inferno. The tragedy has left the community in shock and mourning.
