President William Ruto has urged East African Community (EAC) member states to support Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.
During the 14th EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games in Mombasa, Ruto praised Odinga’s extensive experience and dedication to pan-Africanism, describing him as an ideal candidate to lead the continental body.
“Raila Odinga’s leadership would amplify East Africa’s voice in shaping Africa’s development and policies. His commitment to integration and regional growth makes him uniquely qualified,” said Ruto.
The President emphasized that a unified EAC backing Odinga would signal strong regional solidarity and bolster Africa’s influence on global platforms.

Odinga, a former Kenyan Prime Minister, officially launched his AUC campaign last month in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He unveiled a vision of fostering integration and accelerating Africa’s progress.
His competitors include Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato. The three candidates will participate in the *Mjadala Afrika Leadership Debate* on December 13, 2024, at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa. The debate will serve as a prelude to the February 2025 election.
President Ruto, who recently assumed the Chair of the EAC Heads of State Summit, also highlighted the significance of unity during the Inter-Parliamentary Games. He noted that the games foster camaraderie, trust, and collaboration, which are vital for achieving the region’s shared economic and social goals.
“The bonds of friendship and competitive spirit showcased here reflect our vision of a prosperous, united, and peaceful East African Community,” Ruto remarked.
