New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Jessica Tisch has announced the arrest of the main suspect in connection to the brutal murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
According to police reports, Brian Thompson was shot dead last week outside a New York City by a masked man in broad daylight. Security camera footage from December 4 shows the suspect pulling his firearm and firing at least three times at close range.
In the footage, the 50-year-old CEO collapses on the pavement and subsequently dies from his injuries.
The suspect, 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione, was arrested at a McDonald’s restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a worker recognized him from police photos and called the police.
According to Tisch, Mangione was arrested using a United States passport and numerous phony IDs, including one under the name Mark Rosario, which he used to check into a hostel in New York City before the shooting.
During the arrest, he was found in possesion of a silencer and a pistol, "both consistent with the weapon used in the murder".
Police believe the weapon is a "ghost gun" - one built at home without a serial number and potentially created using a 3D printer.
Tisch said Mangione was carrying a "handwritten document" that detailed "both his motivation and mindset" for Thompson's murder.
Mangione was charged late Monday with homicide, possessing an unauthorized handgun, forgery, and giving police a fake identity.
