Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse has accused confident leaders of obstructing the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) through legal challenges.

Speaking during a burial in Kibwezi, Makueni County, Mutuse claimed that some individuals intentionally used court cases to hinder progress and criticized them for allegedly exploiting this situation to attack the government.

“There are leaders monopolizing this issue by filing cases to block the formation of the IEBC. We needed this commission set up yesterday, and their delays are unacceptable. Kenyans will not tolerate these tactics," Mutuse stated.

He emphasized the urgency of forming the IEBC to prepare for the 2027 General Election and facilitate by-elections in constituencies without elected representatives. Mutuse also signaled his intention to challenge these cases in court to ensure swift resolution and allow the IEBC selection panel to carry out its mandate without interference.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has urged the lifting of a Court of Appeal injunction to stop the panel’s formation. Kalonzo accused the government of using proxies to delay the process, labeling it a deliberate tactic.

“They’ve wasted precious time. President William Ruto must direct his proxies to withdraw this case. It’s time for the IEBC reconstitution to proceed,” Kalonzo asserted.

The selection of the IEBC panel has also faced internal disputes within the Azimio la Umoja coalition. The conflict stems from disagreements between the National Liberal Party (NLP) and Wiper Party over their nominees, with NLP proposing Dr. Augustus Muli and Wiper nominating Koki Muli.
