The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has revealed that John Muchiri Muthoni, a 27-year-old man whose naked body was discovered in Milimani Kawaida, Banana Hill, Kiambu County, was a victim of mob justice.

John was last seen on Friday, January 3, at 3 p.m., before he went missing under unclear circumstances. According to his girlfriend, she received a call early Saturday directing her to where his body lay. Upon arrival, she found him naked with visible injuries.

While some linked his death to recent abductions targeting government critics, the DCI stated otherwise. According to their investigation, John and several accomplices allegedly attempted to steal from a nearby rental property.

Residents, alerted by the commotion, raised the alarm. The suspects fled, but John was caught and subjected to mob justice about 20 meters from the scene.

The DCI further disclosed that the property had previously experienced multiple break-ins. However, locals interviewed by journalists claimed no knowledge of the incident, and there was no police report of a robbery. Additionally, allegations that John tampered with a Wi-Fi receiver were dismissed, as the area lacks wireless connectivity.

John’s body remains at Kihara Sub-County Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
In related developments, the families of five men abducted in December—allegedly over social media posts critical of President William Ruto—confirmed their release on Monday. However, one individual, Steve Mbisi, remains missing.

Meanwhile, another case involving 24-year-old Ibrahim Mwiti, whose body was found at Thika Level 5 Hospital mortuary, was clarified. The National Police Service reported Mwiti died in a hit-and-run accident, refuting claims he was an activist or a victim of abduction.
