Belgut Member of Parliament Nelson Koech has alleged that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua played a key role in the violent anti-government protests of 2024. Speaking on Citizen TV’s *Daybreak Show* on Monday, Koech claimed that Gachagua, alongside other politicians, orchestrated the chaos during the demonstrations.

“The only protest organized by young people was one. The other was driven by politicians, including the former Deputy President, and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved charges,” said Koech. He added that charges against three MPs and another individual had already been sanctioned by the DPP.

Koech further dismissed claims that the protests were youth-led, saying, “In my view, the way it happened, the people involved were not young people.”

During the height of the protests on June 26, 2025, Gachagua deflected blame, instead accusing the National Intelligence Service (NIS) of failing to prevent the unrest. He called for the resignation of NIS Director General Noordin Haji, criticizing his leadership and the agency’s effectiveness.

“I sympathize with President Ruto because this information was not available to him. The NIS is mandated to provide such intelligence, but we now have a dysfunctional agency that has exposed the President, the government, and the people of Kenya,” Gachagua stated.

He further held Haji accountable for the chaos, saying, “Noordin Haji must take responsibility for the deaths and mayhem witnessed. He has failed the President, the government, and Kenya by not doing his job. He must resign and allow the President to appoint a competent Director General.”

The allegations have deepened political tensions, with leaders within the Kenya Kwanza government blaming the former Deputy President for the unrest, while Gachagua and his allies insist that the State is to blame for the situation.
