The High Court has ruled that former Migori Governor Okoth Obado, along with his aides Michael Oyamo and Caspal Obiero, must stand trial for the 2018 murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno and her unborn child.
Lady Justice Cecilia Githua determined on Thursday that the prosecution had established a *prima facie* case against the three, linking them to the gruesome killing that occurred on September 3, 2018, in a forest within Homa Bay County.
### **Key Testimonies and Prosecution’s Case**
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) built its case through prosecution-guided investigations, presenting evidence from 42 witnesses. Among them was a journalist who was abducted alongside Otieno but managed to escape by jumping from a moving vehicle.
Obado, through his legal team led by Kioko Kilukumi and Rodger Saganba, argued that the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence directly implicating him. He admitted to being in a relationship with Otieno and claimed he was ready to support her and their unborn child.

Meanwhile, Oyamo and Obiero also sought acquittal, dismissing the prosecution’s case as weak and based on unreliable witness testimonies.
The case is scheduled for mention on February 25, 2025, when the court will give further directions on the trial.
