Security officials in Mandera County are on high alert after five local chiefs were abducted on Monday by individuals believed to be al-Shabaab militants.
According to North Eastern Regional Commissioner John Otieno, the administrators were en route to Elwak when they were intercepted and taken hostage between Bamba Owla and Ires Suki. A coordinated security operation has since been launched to track the perpetrators and rescue the victims.
Reports indicate that the chiefs were scheduled to attend a crucial meeting before President William Ruto visited the region this week. The President, accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, is set to embark on a week-long tour across Mandera, Garissa, and Wajir counties to engage with local communities and assess key development projects.
Authorities have intensified security measures in the North Eastern region in light of the abductions, reinforcing efforts to curb militant activities and ensure the safety of residents.
