Former Likoni Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO), Charles Onyango Ka’galo, has been charged in a Mombasa court after allegedly soliciting and accepting a Ksh.20,000 bribe.

Onyango was arrested by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives at his rural home in Oyugis, where he had been living since retiring. Authorities then transported him to Mombasa for his court appearance.

During the Wednesday hearing before Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku, Onyango faced three charges: abuse of office, soliciting a bribe, and receiving a Ksh.20,000 inducement to avoid prosecuting a suspect in an ongoing criminal investigation. The alleged incident occurred at Lovely Bar and Restaurant in Soko Mjinga, Mombasa County.

The former DCIO denied all charges and was granted release on a Ksh.500,000 bond with a similar surety or an alternative cash bail of Ksh.200,000. The case is set for mention on February 19, 2025.

The EACC reaffirmed its commitment to tackling bribery cases with the same intensity as high-profile corruption scandals. The commission emphasized that corruption weakens public trust, compromises service delivery, and undermines the integrity of institutions.
