The Kibera High Court in Nairobi has denied Sarah Wairimu Cohen bail in the ongoing murder case of her late husband, businessman Tob Cohen.

The ruling was issued on Tuesday after the prosecution strongly opposed her release.

Wairimu, the widow of the Dutch tycoon, is accused of murdering Cohen on July 19, 2019, at their residence in Nairobi’s Lower Kabete area.

Presiding over the case, Lady Justice Diana Kavedza ruled that the prosecution had provided substantial evidence indicating a high possibility of witness intimidation and case interference. The court emphasized that the nature of the case, involving the brutal loss of life, makes it a matter of significant public interest.

"In weighing the interests of justice against the accused’s right to liberty, the court finds it necessary to prioritize the integrity of the trial," Justice Kavedza stated. She further noted that protecting witnesses and preventing undue influence on the proceedings was crucial at this stage.

As a result, Wairimu will remain in custody at Lang'ata Women’s Prison until two key witnesses have testified. Her re-arrest came after Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga reviewed the case and concluded that there was sufficient evidence to charge her with murder.

The case is scheduled for mention on February 26, 2025, for pre-trial directions.
