Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing'Oei has issued an apology after unintentionally posting a deepfake AI-generated video on his official X account. The video falsely portrayed CNN journalist Fareed Zakaria discussing Kenya's involvement in peace diplomacy in Sudan.

In a statement on X, Sing'Oei acknowledged the error and addressed the backlash he received on social media.

"I sincerely apologize for mistakenly sharing an AI-generated video that was falsely presented as genuine commentary from Fareed Zakaria of CNN about the search for peace in Sudan and Kenya’s role in it. I regret any confusion this may have caused, and I appreciate those who flagged the video as a deepfake," he said.

He also revealed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working on an initiative to tackle the issues raised by AI-generated content.

"Our Ministry is collaborating with partners and tech companies to explore the potential of watermarking AI-generated content to ensure it’s not mistaken for human-created media," Sing'Oei explained.

Additionally, Sing'Oei disclosed plans to introduce an AI Diplomacy program at the Foreign Service Academy to help policymakers better address AI-related challenges.

"We are also creating, with the help of our partners and major tech companies, the School on AI Diplomacy (SAID) at the Foreign Service Academy, a program I will attend, aimed at helping policymakers navigate these emerging challenges," he added.

The fake video, designed to resemble a CNN broadcast, featured Zakaria falsely discussing Kenya's role in peace efforts in Sudan. The video quickly drew criticism from Kenyans on X, who accused Sing'Oei of misleading the public by using AI-generated media to advance a government agenda.
