Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati battled a recurrent cancerous brain tumor before his passing.

According to his family, Chebukati was first diagnosed with the tumor and sought treatment in Germany, where he underwent surgery to have it removed. However, in April 2024, doctors discovered that the tumor had returned, prompting a second operation in Germany.

The health setback persisted, and in December 2024, a routine check-up revealed yet another recurrence, requiring further medical intervention. By February 12, 2025, he was readmitted to the hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Tragically, he suffered a cardiac arrest on February 20, 2025.

Addressing misinformation circulating on social media, the family clarified that they were never informed that Chebukati had been declared clinically dead before his passing.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted ahead of his burial, scheduled for March 8, 2025, at his home in Kitale.
