Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) apprehended five traffic police officers on Thursday over allegations of extorting money from motorists in Ekero, along the Kakamega-Bungoma Road in Mumias, Kakamega County.

The arrested officers include Senior Sergeant Julius Kiprotich, Corporal Edna Jeruto, and constables Caroline Emong’ole, John Sugut, and Eric Otwane.

Their arrest follows an extensive investigation triggered by multiple complaints from motorists, motorcyclists, and local residents. Reports indicated that the officers were demanding bribes under the pretense of enforcing traffic laws, without conducting proper vehicle inspections.

During the operation, one of the suspects attempted to flee on a motorcycle. However, local boda boda riders who had gathered to support the EACC operation refused to assist in his escape.

The suspects were transported to the EACC Western Regional Office in Bungoma for processing. Authorities confirmed they would later be transferred to Bungoma Police Station for further legal action.

The EACC reaffirmed its commitment to tackling corruption and urged the public to continue reporting such cases to ensure accountability within law enforcement agencies.
